Mentoring for Our Students Program
Western LCP has been selected to participate in the Australian Government’s 'Mentors for our students' pilot
program which is part of the government’s 'Skilling Australia for the Future' strategy.
The Program aims to:
- engage young people with recently retired tradespeople, professionals and paraprofessionals as mentors
- to encourage young people to seek out careers in areas experiencing skill shortages and to enhance their industry knowledge;
- utilise experienced workers to pass on their skills and knowledge to the future workforce; and
- improve school retention rates and transitions of young people.
Schools in the Hobson’s Bay and Brimbank local government areas are eligible to participate in the pilot which
will target careers associated with maths, science, and engineering subjects. Included in the range of industries
that have been identified as significant for the West are the Transport and Logistics Industry and the Health
sector.
The pilot will match mentors with students, in years 9-12, who have indicated an interest in the field of
expertise of the mentor or who would benefit from more information about the industry sector. Students and
mentors will meet in the student’s school during school hours, for one hour a week for ten weeks.
